Millions of Americans will be traveling this holiday season, including YOU. Between organizing flights, rental cars, accommodation, and figuring out how to pack gifts, you have plenty on your plate already. But of course, you don’t want to forget about your oral health, as nothing spoils the holidays and new year faster than a toothache. Here are 3 easy tips for keeping your smile healthy and snow white while things get hectic.
Make a List…
And check it twice!
Rather than trying to keep everything in your head, create a short list in your phone of what you need to bring to take care of your teeth. This includes your toothbrush, travel-sized toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash. This might seem easy to remember right now, but it’s almost guaranteed that something will be left on your counter as you’re rushing out the door!
Stick to a Routine
One of the best parts about the holidays is that it breaks up your usual schedule. But, the one thing that should stay the same is your daily oral hygiene. Ideally, it should consist of brushing twice a day for two minutes (each!), flossing before going to bed, and rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash. Sticking to this will not only keep your breath fresh for all the quality time with family and friends, but it will also protect your teeth from the sugar-rich goodies you’ll likely be enjoying.
Water is Your Best Friend
There is no end to delicious holiday beverages. Egg nog? Wonderful. Hot cocoa? More marshmallows please! Festive cocktail? Another round!
However, all of these drinks are rich in sugar and can be somewhat acidic, a one-two punch to your enamel. But you can counteract this easily by drinking and swishing your mouth with unflavored water between each beverage. This rinses away the most common causes of tooth decay and gum disease while also helping you feel fuller, naturally cutting down on your calories and alcohol intake.
Simple Gifts
Life gets busy this time of year, but by following these oral health tips, you can enjoy a little peace of mind during the whirlwind of activity.
