If you’re bothered by wrinkles or dark circles under your eyes, you may benefit from either PRF or PRP. These aesthetic treatments can rejuvenate the skin and help you reclaim a more youthful appearance. However, while PRF and PRP are similar in some ways, there are some important differences between them. So which one is the better choice for addressing your aesthetic imperfections?

What are PRF and PRP?

PRF stands for Platelet Rich Fibrin, while PRP is short for Platelet Rich Plasma. Both treatments involve taking a sample of your blood and putting it in a centrifuge in order to concentrate certain components. When these components are injected into your skin, they encourage collagen production and tissue regeneration; this can go a long way toward improving the texture of your skin, reducing fine lines, and addressing other aesthetic issues.

How are PRF and PRP Different?

What exactly distinguishes PRF from PRP? Here’s a closer look at some of the key differences:

  • Processing: To create PRP, your blood sample is spun at a high speed. In comparison, PRF is spun more slowly. This preserves more of the beneficial cells and creates a dense fibrin matrix.
  • Composition: An anticoagulant is often added to PRP to reduce the risk of blood clotting. Meanwhile, PRF does not require the use of any additives.
  • Growth Factor Release: Once PRP is injected, all of the growth factors it contains are released at once. With PRF, the fibrin matrix causes the growth factors to be released more slowly. As a result, PRF typically works longer than PRP.

Which Treatment Should You Choose?

PRP and PRF both have their benefits. However, nowadays more and more patients and dentists are finding PRF to be the preferable choice. This is due to the many advantages it offers:

  • PRF generally offers longer-lasting results. In some cases, the improvements made to your appearance could last as long as a year.
  • Since there are no anticoagulants involved, PRF offers a more natural skin rejuvenation process.
  • Thanks to the higher concentration of growth factors, PRF promotes better collagen production than PRP.

Is PRF or PRP Right for You?

Both PRF and PRP can be worth considering if you want to improve skin quality or address signs of aging. To find out whether either of them is right for you, you can schedule a consultation with your dentist who offers aesthetic treatment. Once they have a chance to learn more about your goals, they can point you toward the best solution for achieving a more youthful appearance.
