BOTOX and facial fillers are both effective methods of warding off fine lines, wrinkles, collagen loss, and other signs of aging. However, people often conflate the two of them. They both have their own benefits and address different cosmetic imperfections. Continue reading to learn more about BOTOX and dermal fillers, how they work, and which one may be right for you!
What Is BOTOX?
BOTOX is a diluted form of “botulinum toxin.” This is injected into overworked muscles that have created lines and wrinkles to help them relax. This works by reducing the appearance of signs of aging. Optimal results usually take from five to ten days to show and can last anywhere from three to six months depending on the patient. While BOTOX can sometimes be used for therapeutic purposes, it is usually used to address the follow imperfections.
- Crow’s Feet
- Muscle Spasms
- Lines Between the Eyebrows
- Horizontal Lines on the Forehead
- Smoker’s Lines Around the Lips
- Lines at the Corners of the Mouth
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers often put in the same category as BOTOX because they are both used for cosmetic purposes. However, dermal fillers achieve more of a “plumping” affect rather than a “smoothing” effect like BOTOX does. Dermal fillers are just collagen that is injected into sunken areas of the face. This is usually the cheeks and jaw area. Each injection only takes about 5 to 10 minutes and results last anywhere from 3 to 9 months.
Which Should I Pick?
When considering whether you want to get BOTOX or dermal fillers, it’s important to consider exactly what type of imperfection you are looking to address or area that you want to enhance. BOTOX may be the better choice if you have wrinkles that you want to appear more subtle. This is usually on the forehead and area the eyebrows. For more static wrinkles, like the ones that are visible when your face is at rest, and for areas that have sunken in, dermal fillers are likely the better solution. During your consultation, you will be able to discuss your cosmetic concerns with your dentist so they can recommend the best solution to meet your needs.
BOTOX and dermal fillers can both go a long way in helping you maintain your youthful appearance. Whichever you choose, you can look forward to the beautiful results!
